Hawaii Pic-A-Day Gallery - Day 18

Green Sand Beach - Do not adjust your monitor! That is the actual colour of this beach near Ka Lae - the southernmost point in the United States. Upon closer inspection, the individual granules of sand were of varying colours - but the presence of pure green particles in the mixture gives the beach an overall greenish hue. Hawaiian beaches are volcanic - the product of fragile volcanic rock being broken down by the ceaseless action of the sea. Since the rock can be of varying colour depending on its mineral composition, Hawaii features red, green, and black sand beaches in addition to the more traditional lighter hues.
